The Canonical Structured Database for Global Fine Spirits
Powering AI agents, beverage analytics, secondary auction platforms, and hospitality tech with a fully provenance-tracked catalog of standardized spirit records, barcodes, cask links, and distillery-level auction indices.

WhiskyDB holds no bottle prices. The auction figure on a card is the linked distillery's mean winning bid at auction over the latest year in the data (WhiskyHunter, as on the statistics page), not a price for that bottle; it appears only for bottlings linked to a distillery tracked there. An ABV of 40.0% can also be the documented default for a source that states none. The same goes for a 700 mL bottle size: the curated seed rows all carry that default, and so does an Open Food Facts record that states no quantity.
Data Architecture & Provenance Engine
How we transform chaotic public web registries and disparate market dumps into clean, relational, institutional-grade datasets.
8 Integrated Sources
Built from Wikipedia, Open Food Facts, the TTB COLA Registry, UK Companies House, EU eAmbrosia and WhiskyHunter auction statistics. The monthly refresh re-queries TTB COLA and WhiskyHunter and re-derives the cask links; the other sources are re-walked in manual full refreshes.
4-Tier Normalization
Automated cleaning pipelines standardize ABV percentages, bottle volumes to mL, grain mash bills to exact ratios, and secondary market auction prices to USD.
Deep Lineage Mapping
Relational linking between spirits, brand owners, independent bottlers, distilleries, hierarchical cask taxonomies, and standardized sensory flavor wheels.
Transparent Commercial Pricing
Free sample, a one-time snapshot, or a monthly auto-delivered refresh — all from the same provenance-tracked catalog.

§ 04 · Frequently Asked Questions
Common inquiries regarding WhiskyDB normalization standards, schema, valuations, and licensing.
What data attributes are included in the WhiskyDB spirits database?
Each spirit record has a name, spirit type, ABV, bottle volume and a primary_source_id into the provenance ledger, and almost all carry a barcode or label ID and a distillery or producer link. Coverage is uneven, and stated plainly: 709 of the 3,093 spirits have an ABV other than 40.0; the rest show 40.0, either stated or the documented default for a source that states none. Bottle volume has documented defaults too: 750 mL on every US label-registry record, whose labels do not publish volume, and 700 mL on the curated seed rows and on Open Food Facts records without a stated quantity. Age statements are rare, and producer-published mash bills and flavor tags exist for only a handful of flagship bottlings.
How often are the secondary market auction valuations updated?
The auction data is WhiskyHunter's monthly mean winning bid per distillery: 7,315 monthly distillery auction benchmarks for 64 distilleries, from 2005 to 2024. They are distillery-level indices, never bottle prices; the data files carry them as 21,553 rows, one per linked bottling per month, and some bottlings linked by recent monthly refreshes carry only the latest months of their distillery's index. The monthly refresh re-checks the source for new months: the $49/month subscription delivers each refresh automatically, and the $49 one-time purchase delivers the current snapshot.
Can I download a free sample before purchasing a commercial license?
Yes! You can immediately download our public CSV sample datasets (spirits.csv and distilleries.csv) from our open-source GitHub repository or explore them interactively via our Hugging Face Sample Explorer without requiring an API key.
Where do WhiskyDB's mash bills and cask links come from?
Mash bills come only from producer-published specifications, and exist for a handful of bottlings. Cask links are either producer-published or derived by rule: a whole-word cask keyword in the bottling name (such as Sherry or Port), or the US legal requirement that bourbon and rye whiskey mature in new charred oak (27 CFR 5.143). Every bottling, producer, cask-link, mash-bill, tasting-note and price row carries a source ID into the data_sources provenance ledger (primary_source_id on spirits, source_id elsewhere). Apart from the documented ABV and bottle-volume defaults, an age statement, mash bill or cask link that no source states stays empty rather than guessed.
